Day 24 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days - January, 2016

Southern Cross

The constellation Crux also referred to as “the Southern Cross” - is the smallest constellation in the sky but it has held an important place in the history of the southern hemisphere.  For centuries, it has served as a navigational beacon for sailors, an impactful symbol to the Egyptians and played an important role in the spiritual beliefs of the Aborigines and many other cultures.  The constellation has been used as an insignia on the flags and stamps of many southern hemisphere nations, including Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Papua New Guinea and regions of Chile and Argentina.

Having navigated by the stars while on a sailboat, this galactic beauty showed up in my painting today...
