Day 28 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days, January, 2015

An Inner Piece

Today's limited color is palette is extended to four different transparent pigments: Quinacridone Burnt Orange,  Quinacridone Violet, Nickel Azo Yellow and Phthalo Blue (Green Shade).   Once again, as with an abstract painting, may be viewed in more than one way.  I chose the vertical view to best describe this inner piece of a landscape-like presentation.

You may choose what appears most pleasing to you...

Day 26 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days, January, 2015

Triad

Used a limited palette of three of my favorite transparent watercolors - Quinacridone Gold, Quinacridone Magenta and Green Gold.  I wanted to allow the colors to interact but keep them clear, crisp and bright in the overlays.  The colors in the framed photo below are the most accurate.

Day 25 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days, January, 2015

Let It Flow

I used some fluid mask to preserve and define some of the shapes.  I especially enjoyed using Lapis watercolor to get some granulation in the blue areas.  Layered with other transparent colors to create depth and places for the eye to explore...

Day 24 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days, January, 2015

In the Beginning

Today's painting was re-purposed from the beginning of a painting that had been sitting around the studio awaiting a facelift.  I used watercolor ground, covering what I did not want and then painted on the new surface created by the ground.  The ground allowed for a nicely paintable substrate that now had texture while still allowing the paint to do its thing.

It was my first time trying the watercolor ground and I was impressed at its adaptability and usefulness.  I was grateful that I had it and was able to experience its ability to rescue a wayward painting.  Sometimes you just need to call in the rescue squad!

Day 20 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days, January, 2015

Searching

Multimedia experience using a watercolor and ink underpainting and then pastels.  It was a challenge to strike a balance between the two mediums.  I searched for an optimal way to use the pastels to soften and blend without muting out the watercolor pigments.

Day 7 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days, January, 2015

Animal Spirits

After a realistic, botanical painting yesterday, I have moved back into the abstract arena. Today's painting represents a limited palette of some of my favorite colors composed of transparents:  Transparent Pyrrol Orange, New Gamboge, Quinacridone Gold and Green Gold plus one non-transparent color - Cobalt Turquoise.

After working primarily with transparent pigments for a while, it is quite noticeable when working with pigments that have more more opacity.  I enjoy the depth and delicacy of transparent colors and yet also appreciate the more definitive coverage of the more opaque paints.  It all works together to achieve balance.

This painting seems to evoke to me the spirits of many animals - thus the title.  See what it may say to you...

Day 6 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days, January, 2015

Homage to a Century Plant

Today is a bit of a departure.  There has been a beautiful Century Plant across the street that has been calling to me to be painted.  In the past I have done detailed botanical drawings and paintings and have always enjoyed honoring plants by immortalizing them on paper or canvas.

The Century Plant deserves to become immortalized because after it expends all its energy shooting its large bloom stock up toward the sky and then blooms with magnificent white flowers - it gives up its life after the blooms wane.  It has its own sense of life expectancy and timing.  Typically a plant lives between 10 and 30 years before blooming.  Thankfully, the mother plant will send out offsets, or baby plants which will eventually replace the expired plant.

Here is my neighborly Century Plant which is preparing to bloom...

Day 5 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days, January, 2015

The Thought of Spring Rising

I'm again using predominately transparent colors - Quinacridone Gold, New Gamboge, Transparent Pyrrol Orange, Ultramarine Turquoise, and Green Gold (one of my very favorites!).  I love the brilliance and the interaction that these colors produce - alone, mixed and layered.

This combination made me feel the quiet potential emergence of Spring...

Day 4 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days, January, 2015

Solstice - Out of the Darkness

Today's painting focuses primarily on transparent colors, playing light against dark as symbolized by the Winter Solstice.  The spark of light is rekindled as the light now continues to quietly expand as the days march on.

Day 3 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days, January, 2015

Day 3 - Red Adobe

More Quinacridones

Day 3 focuses on yet more Quinacridone watercolors.  I am always amazed by the quality of light and pigment that they carry.  They are all transparent which makes them wonderful for layering and adding both vibrance and depth.

Today's painting uses:
  • Quinacridone Gold
  • Quinacridone Deep Gold
  • Quinacridone Pink
  • Quinacridone Rose
  • Quinacridone Fuchsia
  • Quinacridone Sienna
  • Quinacridone Burnt Sienna

I also added some Ultramarine Turquoise (which is also transparent) to the mix.
