Geologic Abstract

A wonderful time was had by all in Carol Nelson's Geologic Abstracts workshop at Art Unraveled recently in Phoenix.  This piece contains many of the textural elements discussed in the workshop.  It was great fun - Thanks Carol!

Day 19: 30 Days - 30 Paintings - Feb. 2018

Calm Not Chaos

I was gifted with a set of small alphabet and number stamps and it seemed like an appropriate time to play with them and some tertiary colors.  A break today...a simple doodle-moment...with commentary...

Day 7: 30 Days - 30 Paintings - Feb. 2018

Colorful Cacti Category

Here is another addition to my Arizona Collection.  Winning in the Colorful Cacti Category is our very own Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. This rather colorful cactus lives in our backyard.   Although she isn't actually quite this colorful in 'real life', her soul is energetic, a bit spikey and definitely colorful!
Enjoy!

Day 30: 30 Days - 30 Paintings - Sept. 2016

Melding Body and Soul

Thank you for partnering with me on this thirty day painting odyssey. We have traveled to many places and utilized many visual components.  Today, it ends as it began...with the symbol of the Sri Yantra.  As can be seen in many of my paintings throughout the thirty days, the image of the Sri Yantra appears frequently in both obvious placement and more obscurely in the background.  As noted, mantras are geometrical designs based on the principles of sacred geometry and are often used for meditation.  [See Days 1 and Day 2 for more information.]

This piece utilizes a good deal of texture along with transparent pigment.  I see it as the melding between the physical and the spiritual.  To me, the 'spiritual' is represented by the image of the Sri Yantra, while the 'body' is represented by either a woman in a hooded cloak or a whale breaching the sea.  What do you see?

Day 29: 30 Days - 30 Paintings - Sept. 2016

Spiraling Out of Control

This painting is either spiraling out of control or it's having a bad hair day. :o)  In reality it features molding paste on 140 lb. watercolor paper.  To me it is whimsical, happy and makes me smile.  Who doesn't want more joy and fun in their life???

Day 10: 30 Days - 30 Paintings - Sept. 2016

Between Worlds

Today's painting is a shift to a more quiet, cooler palette using acrylics on 140 lb. watercolor paper.  To me it has an ethereal quality that floats upward.  What do you see and feel?

Day 8: 30 Days - 30 Paintings - Sept. 2016

Zip It!

This painting began as one thing - and ended as another.  One of the things I love about painting abstractly is the necessity to problem solve in order to enable a piece to evolve to its ultimate potential.  It seems to work both vertically and horizontally - you can choose...let me know...

Red Towers

We have journeyed from the powerful standing stones of the Outer Hebrides of Scotland yesterday to the ethereal Red Rocks of Arizona today.  It was a nice trip, right?

This piece is painted on 140 lb. watercolor paper and mounted on a wood panel. It is the latest addition to my Arizona Inspired Artwork Collection...

Arizona Women's Expo

Join us at the Arizona Women's Expo!

If you happen to be in the Phoenix area next weekend, October 10th and 11th, feel free to join us on the Arizona Art Supply Stage at the Arizona Ultimate Women's Expo at the Phoenix Convention Center.

I will be working with and demonstrating Golden's new Qor (pronounced 'core') watercolors both alone and in a multi-media setting.  They are  highly pigmented colors that differ from all other watercolors in that they do not contain traditional gum arabic as a binder - but instead use something called Aquazol®.  The result is a beautifully vibrant, resilient palette that can be utilized in any fine art application.

Come join in the festivities!

Stage Demonstrations Schedule:

10:15am – “Lyrical Layered Paper Landscapes” with Katherine Kurgan

Day 30 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days, January, 2015

Hope for Hawks!

Today's painting represents the final day - Day 30.  I have tremendously enjoyed this round of 30 paintings in 30 days.  Thanks so much to Leslie Saeta as well as all my new artist friends who have been both inspirational and encouraging.  Thanks to all of you who have taken the time to leave comments and provide dialog on topics that interest us all.

The palette for today was meant to be very specific: dark blue and bright green (explanation below).

If you (or anyone you know) follow sports at all, you may realize that the SuperBowl is being held here in Phoenix , AZ this weekend - my hometown.  Supposedly this weekend is being described as the "center of the sports universe".  For all golfing fans the Phoenix Open is happening here in Scottsdale at the same time - which includes most of the major icons in the world of golf.

Amid all the craziness and all the events, what it all boils down to is: lots of people and festivities; lots of traffic; additional security everywhere and a general frenzy in the Valley of the Sun...which today happens to be more like the Valley of the Rain -  a rather unusual occurrence in the desert...

At any rate, it's all good and it's all fun...

The reason for the choice of colors in my painting of primarily bright green (Green Gold) and blue (Indanthrone Blue) is because these are the colors of the Seattle Seahawks. Having lived in Seattle, they are still favorites in our household.  So - all I can say for this final painting of the 30 days is - Hope for the Hawks...

Go Seahawks!

Day 29 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days, January, 2015

Singing Homeland

The palette for this painting encompasses almost all transparent pigments: Quinacridone Gold, Quinacridone Pink, Quinacridone Coral, Phthalo Blue (Green Shade), Indanthrone Blue - with a touch of Cobalt Teal Blue (the lone non-transparent paint).

Believe it or not, the painting is a bit more vibrant in person.  It really does sing a happy and clear tune.

Day 28 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days, January, 2015

An Inner Piece

Today's limited color is palette is extended to four different transparent pigments: Quinacridone Burnt Orange,  Quinacridone Violet, Nickel Azo Yellow and Phthalo Blue (Green Shade).   Once again, as with an abstract painting, may be viewed in more than one way.  I chose the vertical view to best describe this inner piece of a landscape-like presentation.

You may choose what appears most pleasing to you...

Day 27 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days, January, 2015

Triad 2 Ways

Today's painting focuses on another trio of transparent watercolors: Quinacridone Magenta, New Gamboge and Phthalo Blue (Green Shade).  In essence, it falls into the rhelm of a variation of the primary colors of red, yellow and blue.

To me, the painting may work more than one way.  I would be interested in getting your feedback regarding your preference - #1 Vertical or #2 - Horizontal, by leaving a comment below or by emailing info@cagleyart.com:

Day 26 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days, January, 2015

Triad

Used a limited palette of three of my favorite transparent watercolors - Quinacridone Gold, Quinacridone Magenta and Green Gold.  I wanted to allow the colors to interact but keep them clear, crisp and bright in the overlays.  The colors in the framed photo below are the most accurate.

Let It Flow

I used some fluid mask to preserve and define some of the shapes.  I especially enjoyed using Lapis watercolor to get some granulation in the blue areas.  Layered with other transparent colors to create depth and places for the eye to explore...

Day 24 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days, January, 2015

In the Beginning

Today's painting was re-purposed from the beginning of a painting that had been sitting around the studio awaiting a facelift.  I used watercolor ground, covering what I did not want and then painted on the new surface created by the ground.  The ground allowed for a nicely paintable substrate that now had texture while still allowing the paint to do its thing.

It was my first time trying the watercolor ground and I was impressed at its adaptability and usefulness.  I was grateful that I had it and was able to experience its ability to rescue a wayward painting.  Sometimes you just need to call in the rescue squad!
