Day 31: 30 Days - 30 Paintings - Sept. 2016

Compilation of 30 Paintings in 30 Days - September, 2016

Here is a presentation of many of the paintings I completed during the September daily painting challenge.  It was a month of gifts and challenges - but it is always a gift to be in an inspired, creative space.

Thanks so much to all of you who followed each day - for your words of encouragement -and for sharing that sacred space with me.

Enjoy!

Day 30: 30 Days - 30 Paintings - Sept. 2016

Melding Body and Soul

Thank you for partnering with me on this thirty day painting odyssey. We have traveled to many places and utilized many visual components.  Today, it ends as it began...with the symbol of the Sri Yantra.  As can be seen in many of my paintings throughout the thirty days, the image of the Sri Yantra appears frequently in both obvious placement and more obscurely in the background.  As noted, mantras are geometrical designs based on the principles of sacred geometry and are often used for meditation.  [See Days 1 and Day 2 for more information.]

This piece utilizes a good deal of texture along with transparent pigment.  I see it as the melding between the physical and the spiritual.  To me, the 'spiritual' is represented by the image of the Sri Yantra, while the 'body' is represented by either a woman in a hooded cloak or a whale breaching the sea.  What do you see?

Spiraling Out of Control

This painting is either spiraling out of control or it's having a bad hair day. :o)  In reality it features molding paste on 140 lb. watercolor paper.  To me it is whimsical, happy and makes me smile.  Who doesn't want more joy and fun in their life???

Day 28: 30 Days - 30 Paintings - Sept. 2016

Serenity

I'm changing speeds today - veering from the intensity of color to something a bit quieter. Pure and simple, this is my favorite palette: Quinacridone  Gold (otherwise known as Azo Gold) and Phthalo Turquoise.  I felt the need for some deep serenity today and this is what poured forth...

Day 26: 30 Days - 30 Paintings - Sept. 2016

Standing Alone

Today's painting may be considered a companion piece to the Day 23 piece - 'Leather-Look",  The combination of materials in this mixed-media piece include:  acrylic paint; heavy-weight Indian rag watercolor paper; and corrugated coffee holder (thanks Starbucks).

The key elements that unite both pieces are the yellow-ochre gessoed panels on which the pieces are mounted.  The two pieces have some similarities and hang nicely side-by-side but are not a diptych.

I enjoy the intricacies of layers of line and color throughout the piece.  Click on the photo to observe these details...

Day 24: 30 Days - 30 Paintings - Sept. 2016

DreamTime

Once again I am painting on heavy-weight Indian Village rag watercolor paper.  It is an interesting surface on which to work and is quite different from most watercolor papers because it is largely un-sized and therefore acts more like a handmade paper.  I have never been fond of using it with watercolors due to its uneven absorbability - however - I do like using it with acrylic paints.

I have experimented with the paper as a plain substrate and have also pre-primed the paper with gesso.  To my surprise, I actually prefer the un-primed paper to use with acrylics.   Due to the plasticity of acrylics, they do not tend to absorb deeply into the paper, but co-mingle nicely with the paper fibers.

With all of that said, I enjoyed the looseness of line and the dabs of color that evolved as the painting progressed.  Perhaps you may feel the same...

Enjoy!

Day 23: 30 Days - 30 Paintings - Sept. 2016

Leather-Look

The combination of materials in this mixed-media piece include:  acrylic paint; heavy-weight Indian rag watercolor paper; corrugated coffee holder (thanks Starbucks); foil-wrapped clay medallion; plus a small part of a palm tree (naturally shed) from my backyard.  To me, it has the look of of hand-tooled leather - with no cows harmed!   All of this is mounted on a panel painted with yellow-ochre gesso.

Enjoy viewing all the elements!

Day 22: 30 Days - 30 Paintings - Sept. 2016

Starseed

Due to the combination of rich colors and fluid design elements, to me this painting has a multidimensional quality.  It evokes an ethereal sensation which can transport the viewer to a more inward-looking, meditative state.  In the world today - it seems that may be a pretty good place to spend some time...

Day 21: 30 Days - 30 Paintings - Sept. 2016

Mt. Muchmore

Mt. Muchmore? - well OK.  This painting vaguely reminded me of Mt. Rushmore - but there is much more happening...so you get it. It is painted with acrylics on mineral paper with its unique soft, suede-like qualities - which evoke the look of a pastel.  It is mounted on a black panel.  I particularly like the colors peeking out in the sky.  Click on the painting to view its many details...

Enjoy!

Day 20: 30 Days - 30 Paintings - Sept. 2016

Under the Deep Blue Sea

I have cooled the palette down a bit to include the other side of the color wheel - with blues and purples.  HOWEVER, as always with me, there are many complex layers of unexpected hints of color that draw you into the painting and allow you to swim deeply into the sea.
The piece is printed and painted on paper and affixed to canvas.

Enjoy exploring the multidimensional aspects of the painting!

Day 19: 30 Days - 30 Paintings - Sept. 2016

It's Complicated

So - it's complicated.  This piece has numerous transparent layers and intricacies when viewed closely.  It is painted on a heavy, gessoed Indian rag watercolor paper - which is then adhered to a 12" x 24" canvas - painted with a base of Venetian Red gesso.  I told you it was complicated...:o)
Enjoy exploring  the multidimensional aspects of the painting!

Saguaro Hug

'Saguaro Hug' is an intensely colored and highly textured piece, mounted on a 3/4" deep wood panel.  It is part of my Arizona Inspired Collection.  It represents one of my favorite color palettes - one that energizes and delights me.   Perhaps you may have also noticed the Sri Yantra sun...

Daybreak Diptych

Welcome to Dual Daybreak Diptych - try saying that three times quickly - or even once! The heavily textured hillsides are complete with transparent washes on heavy Indian rag watercolor paper.   The Diptych can work in either direction - so once again it is like getting four paintings in one!  Here is the first view:

Day 14: 30 Days - 30 Paintings - Sept. 2016

Google Earth Dual Diptych

Today the two individual coastline paintings have merged into a Dual Diptych.  The water presents its layers of depth while the coastline meanders in and out.    The Diptych can work in two ways - as an inlet and also as a jetty.  View both possibilities and let me know which diptych coastline you prefer...inlet or jetty...it's like getting four paintings in one!

Enjoy!

Day 13: 30 Days - 30 Paintings - Sept. 2016

Google Earth - Shoreline 2

If you have seen my painting from yesterday (Google Earth - Shoreline 1), you will notice that today's painting Google Earth - Shoreline 2 is its companion piece.  It is a continuation of  a portrayal of a coastline as may be seen via Google earth, including the subtle (and not-so-subtle) variation of the water color.
Tomorrow will be another surprise - be sure to check in!

Day 12: 30 Days - 30 Paintings - Sept. 2016

Google Earth - Shoreline 1

Having spent a good deal of time sailing the clear, turquoise waters off the Florida Keys and the Bahamian Islands, I became quite proficient at navigating shallow waters based largely upon the color of the water.  Avoiding shallow, jagged coral reefs is a really good idea for the boat's keel - not to mention the reef. :o)   I wanted to portray a coastline as may be seen via Google earth, including the subtle (and not-so-subtle) variation of the water color.

There will be a surprise tomorrow regarding this shoreline piece - be sure to check back to see what it is!

Day 11: 30 Days - 30 Paintings - Sept. 2016

Indestructible Spirit

Indestructible Spirit reveals the continued American Spirit in the wake of the heart-breaking disaster of this day in the past.  It shows the split in our collective psyche - but also the healing aspects that have allowed us to go on.  It  bestows hints of metallic gold and bronze in the form of acrylic mixed media on canvas - including a painted clay piece, a leather-looking painted paper piece, a mono-printed surface and of course several healing Sri Yantras...

River of Life

Today's painting has been in the works for a while.  Usually my paintings evolve rather quickly.   This one took it's time.  It includes a bit of mono-printed paper, foil, and layers of paint.  Note that the source of the river of life is...you guessed it...a Sri Yantra.

Zip It!

This painting began as one thing - and ended as another.  One of the things I love about painting abstractly is the necessity to problem solve in order to enable a piece to evolve to its ultimate potential.  It seems to work both vertically and horizontally - you can choose...let me know...
