More Inspiration from Kieran Foley

'Painting' with Fiber

Once again Dublin fiber artist Kieran Foley demonstrates the beauty of fiber as 'paint'. The fibers he is using are plant dyed yarns including such colors as indigo, madder and weld (from Wild Mignonette - a  fragrant, mostly yellow, largely Victorian-era herbaceous plant).

Just as one might use paint on canvas, he employs his form of 'paint'/fibers to create intricate and rich designs that result in gorgeous pieces of wearable art.

The progression of photos here present his palette and the evolution of his complex design using those colors.

Once again, he inspires me in the continuation of the creative process.

Crossroad In the Nighttime Sky

Transparent Colors

This painting was done with only transparent Daniel Smith watercolors.  It's amazing to work with both layering and scraping - revealing what's underneath.

Time Out to Honor Knit-Lab by Kieran Foley

Sari

Sometimes I am taken aback by the sheer artistry of some of my fiber artist friends.  The detailed and colorful work done by Dublin, Ireland, designer Kieran Foley boggles my mind.  His medium happens to be yarn, not paint.

I see his creations as the epitome of beauty - not to mention hundreds of hours of intricate knitted stitches!  His designs and eye for color are spectacular...  Here is Sari - one of his latest shawl designs.

He inspires me...

Veins of Color

For this painting, I used a slightly larger format - 7" X 11".  Although I am used to working on a large sized canvas, this  medium begs to be worked small.  The 5" X 7" format may be more the ideal size due to the constant maneuvering of the paper to achieve fluid pours.

Muted Elements

Muted colors dominate the quiet night mood.  I love how the ink allows the interplay of the silken softness vs. lines and texture.  Click on the photo to enlarge it and investigate the detail...

Cooler Temperatures - Outside and Inside

Even Cowgirls Get the Blues

The cooler temperatures in the desert have influenced a cooler temperature in today's palette.  Using only two colors of ink:  Stream and Wild Plum, the combination has additionally produced both a dark blue plus a lovely purple.

The landscape has more of a winter-ish feel to me, now that the intense heat of the summer has finally begun to subside.

Day 30 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days

Song of the Canyon

Today's focus:   Having fun on Day 30!

Today marks the end of the 30 Day - 30 Painting Challenge.  I purposefully used these last 30 days to solely explore a new medium - that of alcohol inks on a yupo substrate.   I was totally intrigued by the bold clarity of the colors and the free flowing nature of the ink.  For me, it combines the most pleasing aspects of two mediums I often work in - watercolors and liquid acrylics.

What I most loved about the inks is that they have a mind of their own because of their free-flowing nature.  The ink demands that one not become attached to anything in the painting while it is in progress, because it may alter itself in a flash.  That provided a huge sense of freedom for me because I knew if I weren't crazy about any particular part, I could very easily spray it and then create an under-painting that would morph into something completely different -  often very beautiful - and ALWAYS unexpected.

The inks suit me extremely well because they:

*  provide very bold, clear colors which mix directly on the page
* dry VERY fast (I paint quickly so I love that)
*  lend themselves to total revision at any moment, causing me to never get discouraged

In summary, I had a great time with the inks and plan to continue using them and pushing them to their limit.
