Day 11 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days - January, 2016

Sedona Vortex

Today brings a heavily textured, somewhat ethereal depiction of a Sedona vortex. As a landscape it underwent a few iterations before it found its comfort level.  The use of coarse molding paste give it its rough surface.  The rest of the painting rather painted itself.

Day 9 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days - January, 2016

The Grid

I'm enjoying the underlying grid that peeks in and out throughout this piece.  Once again, the metallic copper color does not come through in a photo - but adds an attractive sheen to the woven  elements.  There is also an airiness that pervades the piece.

Day 8 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days - January, 2016

Quarkiness

Ah - Quantum Physics - Today's piece gives hints of quarks - up quarks, down quarks, plus electrons, protons, neutrons, etc. These are important to us as artists because they are the molecules of color bubbling up from the imagination.  To me color has energy and life which reflects formerly unseen creativity at the molecular level.

I used acrylics on mineral paper.  If you haven't tried mineral paper, you may want to experiment with it.  It is made from calcium carbonate and has an amazing texture that feels much like suede.  It reacts nicely with acrylics (or other water media) and is slightly absorbent, allowing for soft edges.

Day 7 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days - January, 2016

Subtle Discoveries

By exploring the depth of this piece, you will discover that there is a good deal going on. The honeycomb theme continues from yesterday, coupled with spirals and color against the warmth of the background.

Day 6 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days - January, 2016

Honeycomb Haven

The honeycomb structure has always been a source of fascination for me.  It is both strong yet delicate - an engineering feat.  To me, it relects the organizing principle of life - constructed from one of the five platonic solids which form the basis of the universe.

My work with a bee company taught me a great deal about the bees and their pivotal role in all our lives.  Some say that bees represent the consciousness of the planet.  I say we honor them and the amazing job they do for us...

Oh - and one more thing...

I'm not obsessed with sports - or sports mascots - but I saw this photo today and just had to include it as a part of my Cactus Bowl 'mascot focus' over the past few days.  It made me smile - perhaps it may amuse you as well...

Here are the mascots from all of the Arizona sports teams - don't ask me who they all are. I am only now familiar with Spirit and Sparky.
Smile...a little levity is a good thing...

Day 5 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days - January, 2016

Land Jewels

I love shiny things.  This painting has plenty of shine (difficult to capture in a photo) - including copper and bronze paint plus bronze foil.  Copper and turquoise is an Arizona color combination frequently found in nature and in Native American artwork.   The color turquoise evokes creativity and the copper and bronze emit a quality of reflective and refractive mineral-based light.   The combination is also close to a complementary tertiary reflection.  It appeals to me in a big way.
