Homage to a Century Plant

Today is a bit of a departure.  There has been a beautiful Century Plant across the street that has been calling to me to be painted.  In the past I have done detailed botanical drawings and paintings and have always enjoyed honoring plants by immortalizing them on paper or canvas.

The Century Plant deserves to become immortalized because after it expends all its energy shooting its large bloom stock up toward the sky and then blooms with magnificent white flowers - it gives up its life after the blooms wane.  It has its own sense of life expectancy and timing.  Typically a plant lives between 10 and 30 years before blooming.  Thankfully, the mother plant will send out offsets, or baby plants which will eventually replace the expired plant.
