Day 31 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days - January, 2016

January, 2016 - 30 Day Compilation

Here is a little presentation of most of my paintings produced over the past 30 days.  You can go back through each day of my January Blog to see each painting in its glory along with its back-story. When painting under a daily deadline, I find that I like and relate strongly to  some - and others, maybe not-so-much.  It's the nature of the Challenge.

However, I learned something with each painting - whether it was painted at 4:00 in the afternoon or 1:00 in the morning...whether feeling great or enduring a nasty virus.  No matter what - I painted...I loved it...and wanted to share it with you...

Enjoy, Share and Support!

Day 30 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days - January, 2016

Sunset in the City

As of today, the sun is setting on the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge -  January, 2016. The experience of making the commitment to produce a painting per day may aptly be termed a challenge in the midst of the happenings of 'daily life' - especially if the process is outside of what one normally does.

What I love about the process is that it moves you out of a place of the severe inner critic and allows you to accept the goodness of what you produce as an unfolding.  some days I loved what appeared on the canvas/panel/paper and other days it was more of an acceptance and learning of the potential of what could evolve in the next painting.

I also love the interaction with my many painter-friends - many of whom have become wonderful 'cyber-friends' and great supporters.  I have learned so much from each of you - old and new.  Thank you so much!!!  Thanks also to Leslie Saeta for being the catalyst to allow this all to happen.

Day 29 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days - January, 2016

Gilded Diamonds

The Harlequins strike again!  The series keeps expanding.  Today's painting includes warm and transparent Quinacridones paints along with metallic Gold.  Unfortunately the deep and shiny Gold is difficult to capture in a photo.  It truly exudes a rich and warm glow in person!

Day 28 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days - January, 2016

Lemuria

Lemuria is the name of a hypothetical lost land deemed to be located in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.  It was thought that the continent sank beneath the ocean as a result of a major geologic event such as a pole shift.

For whatever reason, this painting seemed to choose its own underwater name.

Day 27 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days - January, 2016

Going Green

At times I shy away from working in green because it seems to oftentimes be a very fickle range of colors.  Then, I get my hands sloppy with paint and delight in the variety of shades of green that can be mixed - and I have a great time.  Here I'm peering through the illusion of a barrier that holds me from playing with greens...before I decide to just have fun and go green...

Today's painting brings warmth in the baby harlequins emanating from the pink and yellow of the underpainting.  As winter continues, the warmth of color enlivens us.

Day 24 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days - January, 2016

Southern Cross

The constellation Crux also referred to as “the Southern Cross” - is the smallest constellation in the sky but it has held an important place in the history of the southern hemisphere.  For centuries, it has served as a navigational beacon for sailors, an impactful symbol to the Egyptians and played an important role in the spiritual beliefs of the Aborigines and many other cultures.  The constellation has been used as an insignia on the flags and stamps of many southern hemisphere nations, including Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Papua New Guinea and regions of Chile and Argentina.

Having navigated by the stars while on a sailboat, this galactic beauty showed up in my painting today...

New Year Harlequin

My Harlequin Series now has a new member!  You can view some of my previous Harlequin series paintings in my blog from last September here:

I wanted to explore the warm reds and the deeper maroon reds - in combination with metallic gold with a hint of quinacridone gold and phthalo turquoise.  My background as a Color Therapist comes to the forefront frequently...

Color Cascades

As parts of the country become buried under record-breaking snow, it is helpful to remember that cascades of color-laden flowers will one day return when winter melts away.

The painting is heavily textured and laden with color - meant to bring a joyful nod of hope to the future .

Day 20 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days - January, 2016

Still Pedaling...

We all keep pedaling along - over smooth roads and rough terrains.  This painting rejoices in all of it.  The wheels keep turning day by day as we continue on this journey together.

The painting contains some bronze metallic paint that catches the light and reflects it in different ways in various light sources.  It is painted on a deep-cradled birch panel so I have included two photos:  one in indoor light and one in outdoor light which also shows the side.

The 1 1/2" birch-cradled painting is dynamic and inventive.  It is painted on all sides and is ready to enhance and illuminate your home.

Sunny Day Static

Static rains down on a sunny landscape.  Acrylic on mineral paper creates a soft resistance and glow, not unlike the quality of the paper itself.  It is an intriguing substrate on which to work.  I like it!

Day 17 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days - January, 2016

Blooming Love

Today's painting uses heavy bodied and liquid acrylics on a gold gessoed canvas.  It is smoothly textured with fiber paste.  The gold gesso captures the light and gives a warmth and soft glow to the piece, making it both eye-catching and heart-warming.

Day 16 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days - January, 2016

Kaleidoscope

I wish you could see this painting "up close and personal".  The lighter portions of the design have a slightly greenish, luminescent tinge.  The paint has some metallic silver mixed in which of course makes it shiny. It captures the light in a wonderful, creamy way.

This is simply one of those pieces that demands to be held in your hands and turned to the light!

Day 12 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days - January, 2016

Wondering

I found this little experiment to be worthy of note.  I have frequently used Yupo - primarily with alcohol inks and watercolor.  However, I was curious to experiment with watercolor ground on Yupo. On the right-hand side below, I used watercolor ground over Yupo.  The effect of the ground can be seen as it creates a slightly rough surface that mutes the color.

The advantage of using a ground is that it can turn any surface (i.e. glass, plastic, etc.) into a surface over which watercolor can be used.  I decided that in this case, I preferred the raw Yupo to the ground-covered surface.  See what you think...

Day 11 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days - January, 2016

Sedona Vortex

Today brings a heavily textured, somewhat ethereal depiction of a Sedona vortex. As a landscape it underwent a few iterations before it found its comfort level.  The use of coarse molding paste give it its rough surface.  The rest of the painting rather painted itself.

Day 9 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days - January, 2016

The Grid

I'm enjoying the underlying grid that peeks in and out throughout this piece.  Once again, the metallic copper color does not come through in a photo - but adds an attractive sheen to the woven  elements.  There is also an airiness that pervades the piece.

Day 8 - 30 Paintings - 30 Days - January, 2016

Quarkiness

Ah - Quantum Physics - Today's piece gives hints of quarks - up quarks, down quarks, plus electrons, protonsneutrons, etc. These are important to us as artists because they are the molecules of color bubbling up from the imagination.  To me color has energy and life which reflects formerly unseen creativity at the molecular level.

I used acrylics on mineral paper.  If you haven't tried mineral paper, you may want to experiment with it.  It is made from calcium carbonate and has an amazing texture that feels much like suede.  It reacts nicely with acrylics (or other water media) and is slightly absorbent, allowing for soft edges.
