Day 31: 30 Days - 30 Paintings - Feb - March 2018
Compilation of 30 Paintings in 30 Days, February - March, 2018
Thank you so much for joining me on this latest 30 in 30 journey! Thanks for the support and comments from all "new friends" as well as those "old friends" who have faithfully followed and offered the perfect words of support. As always, thanks go to Leslie Saeta for providing the platform, especially in the midst of her own personal struggles this month.
Feel free to read additional comments below for a more in-depth commentary on this 30 in 30 experience.
As always, creating 30 paintings in 30 days allows for a massive learning experience that is often a bit of a roller coaster ride. Some days are joyous - other days - not so much.Over the past 30 days I intentionally focused on such things as:
- mastering the design of a square space
- working with white space
- revisiting gold leaf
- not over-working a piece - i.e. knowing when to stop
- using various substrates - from unsized rag watercolor paper to cradled birch panels
- refining my palette within a piece
- mixing shades of the same color with its complement
- etc., etc., etc.
Some things were intentional - but oftentimes I let the painting direct the process. Frequently, an intuitive approach is the most profound teacher!

Day 30: 30 Days - 30 Paintings - Feb - March 2018
Inside the Hive
I have worked with bees and bee products for many years. The plight of the bees over the past several years - which has resulted in the dramatic demise of the bee population due to toxic chemicals - is alarming.
My 30th painting in 30 days finale today represents my homage to the bees and the work that they do to serve humanity. To me, the bees provide the proverbial light that allows us so much of the food we eat, as well as the plants and flowers we cherish. I wanted to portray the sense of light that the bee community provides for us all. Hopefully, I have achieved that in my painting 'Inside the Hive'.
Check back tomorrow for a compilation of my 30 paintings over the past 30 days.
Enjoy!

Day 29: 30 Days - 30 Paintings - Feb - March 2018
Train-ing Diptych
I wanted to call this diptych "Leaving on a Jet-Train", or "Frank's Big Adventure" but both seemed a little too long.
The cradled wood panels are perfect for a diptych because of their rigidity and ease to integrate together. They are also relatively light and ship well.
This dual piece was very enjoyable to work on. I love the warmth of the different reds and pinks in contrast with the teal and the definition of the black. The sides of each piece are painted black, therefore the diptych does not need framing - and is ready to hang.
Enjoy!

Day 21: 30 Days - 30 Paintings - Feb. 2018
Gothic Quarter - Barcelona
The walls of ancient cities carry with them character, aged materials, and beautiful muted colors. The Gothic Quarter of Barcelona, Spain is a warren of narrow streets bedecked with imprints, designs and hues that reflect centuries of use and wonder. This painting celebrates the mystery of the old building walls in the meandering, narrow streets of this beautiful, unique city.

Day 18: 30 Days - 30 Paintings - Feb. 2018
Eagle Eye
Some paintings evolve easily. This was not one of those paintings. There are many collage elements in the mix - including a metal band from a wine bottle. There is also a good deal of texture plus some shiny copper paint which unfortunately does not translate into the photo.
It is all mounted on an 11" x 14" x 3/4" panel and is a bit heavy.
Enjoy!

Diamondback
Arizona and diamondback go hand-in-hand - whether you are describing a baseball team or a rattlesnake. You may decide how this painting may fit into the diamondback category.
The colors are warm and inviting - featuring quinacridone gold, maroon, iridescent copper, with just a touch of turquoise.

Muted Reflection
The muted palette today appeared after a full day of rain and grey skies in the desert yesterday - an unusual experience - especially this year. It was enjoyable to work in more quiet colors reflecting the tone of the soft light.

Day 12: 30 Days - 30 Paintings - Feb. 2018
Gold Leaf Canyon
This painting contains a good deal of gold leaf and therefore has shiny components that unfortunately do not photograph well. I prize the traditional combination of Venetian Red Gesso and Gold Leaf - and then using it in an abstract composition. I worked with the design elements off and on for a few weeks until producing this - with which I am pleased.
I hope you enjoy it as well!

Balancing Act
Today's painting is a balancing act between large and small shapes, hard/soft - lost and found edges, color vs. white space, etc., etc. - the usual components when working abstractly... At any rate, it works for me! :o)

Colorful Cacti Category
Here is another addition to my Arizona Collection. Winning in the Colorful Cacti Category is our very own Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. This rather colorful cactus lives in our backyard. Although she isn't actually quite this colorful in 'real life', her soul is energetic, a bit spikey and definitely colorful!

Wild Child
To my eye, the Arizona desert provides a never-ending display of beauty. It resonates deeply with me and I do not tire of observing it around me. This particular agave species greets us on our daily walk. Because its 'leaves' are a bit unruly and bend and twist where ever they choose, I respectfully call it "Wild Child".
It is the latest addition to my Arizona Collection on my website: Come visit for a breath of warmth and sun!
